Certification of Finances

Clarkson has set the total cost of attendance for Fall 2006-Spring 2007 at $39,800.  This overall cost includes tuition, room, board, fees, books & supplies (estimated), and travel & personal expenses (estimated).  The Hockey Scholarship provides funding for tuition, room (average room rate), board, fees and book allowance, which totals $37,438 for the Fall 2006-Spring 2007 school year.  International students on Hockey Scholarship must provide documentation showing financial support in the amount of $2,362 (U.S.) per year.  This amount is the difference between the overall cost of attendance and the Hockey Scholarship.  This amount needs to be verified for the first year and projected for the remaining three.  This is not an amount that you have to pay to Clarkson or that you will be billed for.  The U.S. government mandates that a student show this financial support before we can issue the I-20 form that the student will need to come through immigration.

In order to certify funding, please complete the enclosed Certification of Finances Form.  Please make sure that support totals $2,362 at the bottom of each column.  Your sponsor (parent) will to complete box 8b. and also a bank official will need to sign the form in box 9.  If you have any questions about this form, please contact the Office of Transfer & International Admission at 315-268-2125.

Hockey Scholarship

It is important to make you aware of the IRS tax requirements on your award.  Institutions that provide athletic scholarships to foreign nationals are required by law to tax you on any scholarship monies received in excess of tuition, fees and books.  Basically, funds received for room and board are taxable.  Your student account will show your grant in aid award minus the room and board then a separate credit will be issued to your student account after the calculation of the withholding tax.  This will ensure all costs are covered prior to receiving a refund.  For freshman or those students being charged room and board, the funds credited after the withholding tax will not cover the full charges and you will have a balance to pay on your account.  For the 2006-2007 academic year the amounts are as follows:

Tuition fees and books:                                       $27,790
Room and Board:                                             +  9,648 *taxable
*Taxes                                                             -   1,351
Total Scholarship Credited to Account                    $36,087

As a freshman you will be charged $36,738, which includes tuition, fees, room and board.  When you subtract the total scholarship credit to account from the total charges a $651 balance left to pay for the 2006-2007 academic year.  You can file a tax return at the end of the calendar year to re-coup the taxes paid on your scholarship.

Medical/Health Coverage

All students who attend Clarkson must show proof of medical/health coverage before they will be allowed to register for classes at fall registration/orientation.  Over the summer months, the Student Administrative Services Office will send out information to students about this and require you to complete a form indicating whether or not you have coverage or if you need to purchase an outside policy through the University for the school year.  This coverage typically costs between $400 and $500 for the year. All hockey related claims will go to the student’s primary coverage first.

Immigration

When reporting to Clarkson at the start of the fall semester, be prepared to stop at U.S. Immigration to meet with an immigration official.  You will need to show the following documents:  letter of acceptance, certification of finances, I-20 form and SEVIS payment receipt (please follow instructions sent with I-20 about payment of SEVIS fee; the fee is not payable at the border and must be done in advance).

It will also be helpful to have a passport.  The official will stamp your passport and then you should be able to cross the border from that point on without issue.
