KNIGHTS SHUTOUT COLGATE, MOVED INTO EIGHTH

February 27, 2004

Dustin Traylen posted 35 saves against Colgate for his 3rd career shutout
Hamilton, NY- Sophomore Dustin Traylen (Kirkland, QUE) posted 35 saves as the Clarkson University Hockey team continued its domination over Colgate University at Starr Rink by posting its third straight shutout over the Raiders in Hamilton, NY with a 1-0 victory Friday night. The Golden Knights, who won their second straight one-goal game over the first place team in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), move up to eighth place in the league standings with an 8-11-2 conference mark. Clarkson, which knocked Brown out of first place with last Saturday’s 3-2 win at Cheel Arena, stands at 13-15-5 overall.

“I am extremely pleased with our effort,” stated head coach George Roll.  “We really laid it all out there tonight. To come in here and win in a tough building is a huge momentum builder for us. We knew if was going to be playoff hockey tonight. Give Colgate a lot of credit. They kept coming, but our guys held them off and found a way to gain a big win on the road.”

After a scoreless first period, Clarkson tallied the lone goal of the contest just 40 seconds into the middle frame. While killing a penalty, senior Trevor Edwards (Carleton Place, ONT) collected a loose puck at the blueline and broke in on a 2-on-1 with junior Mac Faulkner (King city, ONT). Edwards looked off the Colgate goaltender and then fired a quick wrist shot from the left circle for an unassisted, shorthanded tally and his ninth goal of the season. Roll noted, “We have been stressing that in practice, to go hard to the net and take the shot. We have tried to be too cute on our 2-on-1’s this year. Trevor looked the goaltender off and took the shot to score obviously a big goal for us.”

The Raiders out shot the Knights 35-21, but Traylen was solid all game to record his second shutout of the year and third career whitewash while extending the Green and Gold’s shutout streak over Colgate on its home ice to 188 consecutive minutes. “Dustin played unbelievable tonight,” said Roll. “I thought we did a real good job of keeping their shots to the perimeter and making the easy play in our end.”

Clarkson was 0-of-4 on the power play, while the Raiders were 0-of-5 with the man-advantage.

The Knights close out the regular season playing defending ECAC champion Cornell at Lynah Rink in Ithaca on Saturday. The 7:00 p.m. game will be televised taped delayed by Time Warner Cable, beginning at 9:00 p.m.
