Fort Myers, FL – Freshman Darrell Carey (Bohemia, NY) and junior Nick Huffman (Fulton, NY) each threw opening day gems for the Clarkson University Baseball team, but the Golden Knights offense struggled against two number one starters from Amherst and Worcester State, dropping two seven-inning decisions Saturday night, 3-1 to the Lord Jeffs and 3-0 to the Lancers.
In the first game, Carey allowed six hits over six innings and threw just 70 pitches in the complete game, but Amherst bunched their hits in a three-run third inning that would prove to be the difference in the game. The Golden Knights produced their lone run of the contest when junior J.J. Lorence (Liverpool, NY) reached on a fielder's choice, scoring sophomore Rob Cowin (Albany, NY) who had led off the inning with a double down the third base line. Clarkson produced two hits in the first game as three Lord Jeffs' pitchers combined to shut down the offense of the Golden Knights.
In the second game, Huffman was even better than Carey, allowing only five hits over a six innings. The Golden Knights offense produced more hits in the second contest (five), but the production was spread out over five separate innings. The Lancers scored a run in the first inning and added two more in the third inning, but both tallies in the third were unearned. All five Clarkson hits were singles.
The Golden Knights return to action on Sunday afternoon when they face nationally-ranked Rowan College in a doubleheader at Naples, FL.
