Kaleen McCool and Kristi Higgins scored goals three minutes apart in the first half as Plattsburgh State defeated the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team 2-0 in the opener for both teams Wednesday afternoon at Potsdam State.
Despite the loss, the Golden Knights faired considerably better against the Cardinals in 2004 compared to their last meeting. In 2003, Clarkson dropped a 7-1 decision against the powerful Plattsburgh State squad, but appears to be a much improved team. The Cardinals outshot Clarkson just 5-0.
McCool opened the scoring in the first half at the 29:14 mark when she received a pass from Yvette Rada. McCool shot a groundball to the left side of Clarkson goalie Lauren Arredondo (Allendale, NJ) and it rolled just inside the far post. Higgins followed up the opening score at the 32:27 mark she slid a shot under a diving Arredondo from the 15-yard line inside the penalty box.
The Golden Knights dropped to 0-1 on the season and will face Colby-Sawyer this Saturday at 3:30 pm in the North Country Classic held at St. Lawrence University. Plattsburgh State moved to 1-0 with their victory.
