SKIDMORE STOPS LATE CHARGE BY KNIGHTS

October 22, 2005

Potsdam, NY - Despite several solid chances in the waning minutes of the second half, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team came up short in a 2-1 Liberty League defeat at the hands of Skidmore Saturday afternoon at Clarkson Field.

The Golden Knights dropped to 5-10-1 overall and 0-6-0 in the Liberty League, while Skidmore solidified its Liberty League post-season credentials with a 4-2-1 mark in the conference and a 12-4-1 overall mark. Clarkson closes out the regular season next weekend when they visit Vassar College.

Although both teams had a few fair chances in the first half, neither could come through with a goal until very late in the first half. Senior Morgan Caldwell picked up her team-leading 12th goal of the season for the Thoroughbreds when she lofted a shot from about 20 yards out in to the top right corner with less than a minute remaining in the half at 44:12.

The Thoroughbreds produced what would prove to be the game-winning goal 15 minutes into the second half when Caldwell sent a cross from outside the box to around the penalty line where Cari Dugan hammered in a shot for a 2-0 lead for Skidmore.

Clarkson put on pressure in the final 20 minutes and Sophomore Emily Mahar (Baldwinsville, NY) scored her fourth goal of the season when she sent home a shot at 78:31. Classmate Catie Reed (Lafayette, NY), who assisted on the goal, tied a school record with her eighth assist of the season. The Golden Knights continued to take a few chances on the Skidmore goal, but none found their way to the back of the net.

Senior goalkeeper Lauren Arredondo (Allendale, NJ) made 10 saves for the Golden Knights while Liza Mills made four saves for the Thoroughbreds. Skidmore out shot the Knights 19-7, but held a slimmer advantage in corner kick opportunities, 7-5.
