Sophomore Steve Zalewski (New Hartford, NY) scored twice on the power play to lead Clarkson University to a 4-2 victory over Yale University on Saturday night at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, CT.
Trailing 1-0 entering the second period, Clarkson’s efforts began to pay off in the middle stanza as the Golden Knights scored twice to take the lead. At 6:19, senior captain Chris Brekelmans (London, ONT) picked up a loose puck at the point and wristed a shot on goal that deflected in off a Yale defender in front for his third goal of the season. The Knights took the lead at 12:55 with Zalewski scoring on a 5-on-3 power play off a shot from the bottom of the right circle. Freshman Shea Guthrie (Carleton Place, ONT) and sophomore David Cayer (Longueuil, QUE) set up the goal.
Zalewski put the Knights on top 3-1 at 2:04 of the final frame with his third goal of the year, a power-play tally off assists from linemates Guthrie, with his team-high 10th assist of the year, and sophomore Shawn Weller (South Glens Falls, NY).
Yale pulled to within one at 14:41, but Clarkson sealed the victory with an empty-net goal by Weller with 37 seconds left with Zalewski assisting.
The Knights out shot the Bulldogs 37-25. Junior Kyle McNulty (Wakefield, RI) posted 23 saves as he improved his record to 4-1 on the season. Clarkson was 2-of-8 on the power play and killed off all eight Yale man-advantage opportunities.
Clarkson, which stands at 6-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the ECACHL, returns to Cheel Arena next weekend hosting Princeton and Quinnipiac.
