DARTMOUTH HALTS CLARKSON WIN STREAK

February 12, 2005

Their longest winning streak in three seasons came to an abrupt halt for the Clarkson University Hockey team in Hanover, NH on Saturday night as the Golden Knights lost 5-1 to Dartmouth College. Fresh off a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 victory at Vermont on Friday, the Knights could not extend their four-game win streak as they suffered their first loss since January 28.

The Golden Knights, who own an 11-17-2 overall record and a seventh-place 7-10-1 Eastern College Athletic Conference Hockey League (ECACHL) mark, return to the road this coming weekend to play at Harvard and Brown.

Clarkson took the initial lead against the Big Green on senior captain Mac Faulkner’s (King City, ONT) second goal of the weekend and 11th of the season on a rising shot from the blueline that found its way through a screen in front of the Dartmouth goaltender at the 17-minute mark of the first period. Sophomore Brodie Rutherglen (Trail, BC) assisted.

After that it was all Dartmouth, however, as the home team answered back with five straight goals at Thompson Arena. The Big Green tied the score just 42 seconds after Faulkner’s tally. Dartmouth went on top with two goals in the second period, a power-play marker at 11:38 and an even-strength score at 14:16, and added two more in the third to claim the convincing victory. The Big Green netted their fourth goal 35 seconds into the final frame and connected for their second power-play goal, just three seconds into their fourth man-advantage opportunity of the contest at 3:31.

Dartmouth out shot Clarkson 40-26, including a 15-5 margin in a dominating second-period effort. Junior Dustin Traylen (Kirkland, QUE) started in the Knights’ goal and faced a barrage of grade A shots making 28 saves before leaving after the Big Green’s fifth goal. Freshman David Leggio (Buffalo, NY) came off the bench for the final 16:29 of play and recorded seven stops.

Clarkson was 0-of-3 on the power play, while the Big Green went 2-of-6 with the man-advantage.
