The Clarkson University Hockey team suffered its third straight loss falling to Brown 5-2 at Meehan Auditorium in Providence, RI on Saturday night. On Friday, the Golden Knights were shut out by Harvard 5-0 in Cambridge, MA. Clarkson owns an 11-19-2 overall record and stands in eighth place in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Hockey League (ECACHL) with a 7-12-1 conference mark. The Knights play the top two teams in the league to close out the regular season, hosting Colgate and Cornell at Cheel Arena this coming weekend.
At Brown, the home standing Bears jumped out to the early lead scoring 4:57 into the first. Clarkson battled back to tie it later in the stanza when freshman center Steve Zalewski (New Hartford, NY) poked in a loose puck that had squirted behind the Bears’ goaltender after senior assistant captain Jay Latulippe (Saratoga Springs, NY) took a hard shot from the right circle. Latulippe gained his 99th career point on the Zalewski’s 12th goal of the year that came at 15:49.
The second period, which has been the Green and Gold’s downfall during their recent losing skid, was once again unkind to the Knights as Brown tallied three goals in the middle frame to take a commanding 4-1 lead after 40 minutes despite being out shot in the stanza 14-10. Clarkson has been out scored 9-0 in the second over the past four games. The Bears went on top 2-1 at 3:55 and then just 15 seconds later made it 3-1. With both teams skating four aside, Brown made it 4-1 at 9:10.
The Bears added their fifth goal at 4:45 of the third, before senior assistant captain, defenseman Ken Scuderi (Bethpage, NY) scored his second of the season with just three seconds remaining. Junior Jeff Genovy (Kalamazoo, MI) and freshman Ryan Hodkinson (Mt. Sinai, NY) assisted.
Clarkson out shot Brown 35-29. Junior Dustin Traylen (Kirkland, QUE) was once again solid in the Knights’ goal with a 30-save effort. Clarkson was 0-of-7 on the power play, while the Bears were scoreless in their six man-advantage opportunities.
