Potsdam, NY – Senior point guard Linda Fernandez (Kennebunkport, ME) scored a team-high 13 points and shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line as the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team ended a seven-game losing streak with a 58-47 Liberty League victory over Vassar College Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-15 overall and 1-7 in conference play, while the Brewers dropped to 5-13 and 1-7. Clarkson closes out the home portion of the schedule tomorrow when they host Rensselaer.

Vassar raced out to a 7-2 lead after the first three minutes, but the Knights dominated play for the next 13 minutes, going on a 19-4 run to earn a double-digit advantage. However, Vassar cut the lead to six with a pair of lay ups off of missed free throws and the two teams traded baskets for the next few minutes. Clarkson ended the half on a 5-0 run to return their lead to double figures, thanks to a 3-point field goal from Linda Fernandez, who ended the half as the Golden Knights’ top scorer with nine points.

In the second half, the Brewers cut into Clarkson’s lead in the opening minutes, but the Golden Knights slowly pulled away to take a 47-31 lead at the 9:03. Vassar cut the lead to five points with a strong stretch of play over the next four minutes, but the Golden Knights' solid free throw shooting in the waning minutes gave Clarkson its first win in conference play in the 2004-05 season.

Both teams shot well from the free throw line, with the Knights going 21-for-26 from the line and Vassar shooting 15-for-19. The two teams combined for 39 fouls and 44 turnovers.

Clarkson finished with four players in double figures, led by Fernandez’s 13 and followed by 12 from junior Erika Fritjofson (East Barre, VT) and 11 points for both sophomore Mickala Henson (Waverly, NY) and freshman Amanda Czop (Athens, NY). Fernandez also added five steals and Czop chipped in four thefts.

Rachel Cerlen scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Brewers. She also contributed nine rebounds, five coming on the offensive end. Meredith McGair added 12 points for Vassar.
