Troy, NY – Junior Aaron Gundle tallied with less than three minutes remaining in the first half as Rensselaer topped the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team 1-0 in a Liberty League contest Friday afternoon.
The Golden Knights fell to 1-11-1 overall and 0-6 in conference play while the Red Hawks jumped to 5-10-0 and 1-5 in the Liberty League. Clarkson closes league play tomorrow when it faces Vassar College in Poughkeepse, NY.
Gundle scored the game-winner late in the half on a header from Matt Hill, who sent the ball across from the right side, pushing his shot past Clarkson golakeeper Mike St. Croix (Watertown, NY).
Despite several chances in the second half, Clarkson was unable to score the equalizer against Red Hawks goalkeeper Jeffery Krywanczyk, who finished with four saves in the win for the Red Hawks. St. Croix made 10 saves for the Golden Knights.
The Red Hawks owned a 20-5 advantage in shots but edged the Knights just 3-1 in corner kicks.
