Two quick goals by the Clarkson University Women’s Lacrosse team in the opening 10 minutes of play put an early scare into nationally-ranked William Smith, but the Herons were able to overcome a tenacious effort by the Golden Knights to post a 12-4 victory in Liberty League action at St. Lawrence University on Saturday morning.

Sophomore Alicia Chace (Cortland, NY) and junior Lindsey Grigg (Watertown, NY) put Clarkson on top 2-0 at 10:36 with back-to-back goals 58 seconds apart, but William Smith answered back with seven straight goals to take control.

The Herons, who were led in scoring by Sarah Dillion and Rachel Stahl, held a 5-2 lead at the half. William Smith made it 7-2 early in the second stanza.

Freshman Emily Bojarski (Syracuse, NY) put a temporary halt to the Herons’ charge with Clarkson’s third goal at 10:17 with junior Emily Cohen (Bethlehem, NY) assisting.

William Smith out scored the Knights 5-1 over the remaining 19 minutes. Senior Lindsay Roberts (Averill Park, NY) tallied Clarkson’s final goal.

William Smith out shot Clarkson 30-19, but the Knights held the advantage in groundballs 24-21. Bojarski and sophomore Lindsay Walker (Syracuse, NY) led the Green and Gold in groundballs with five and four, respectively.

Junior Erin Duffy (Liverpool, NY) made eight saves for Clarkson.

At 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the Liberty League, Clarkson will return to play when it hosts Potsdam State in a non-league game on Tuesday, March 28. William Smith (2-2, 2-0) plays at St. John Fisher on March 29.
