Potsdam, NY - After more than 109 scoreless minutes, a cross from the right side by Deanna Cipoletti found the head of Katrina Liska as Plattsburgh State survived to post a 1-0 win over the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team Tuesday afternoon at Clarkson Field.
The Golden Knights dropped to 3-2-0 on the season and return to action this weekend when they visit Hilbert College. The Cardinals remained unbeaten at 4-0-1.
Both teams struggled to get many solid chances in the first half, but the second half immediately began with Plattsburgh hitting the crossbar and then Clarkson just missing a chance off a corner. The two teams traded scoring chances throughout the half, but it appeared as if neither would muster enough offense in the overtimes to break the scoreless tie.
With just 1:30 remaining in overtime, it looked like the final true scoring chance would belong to Clarkson as freshman Courtney Donovan was able to out maneuver the Cardinals goalkeeper with a good shot at the goal, but Jackie Rosenberg kicked away the chance.
Only one minute was remaining in the second overtime when the Carindals took a chance at the Clarkson net. When the ball was batted away by the Golden Knights defense, it landed on the foot of Cipoletti who then sent the ball in to 5-11 striker Katrina Liska, who headed the ball high over the hands of Clarkson keeper Meagan Emlaw (Norfolk, NY) for the games lone goal at 109:35.
The two teams finished tied in both shots (14-14) and corner kicks (5-5). Emlaw finished with six saves for Clarkson and Kathryn Lind closed with seven saves for Plattsburgh.
