Junior David Leggio (Williamsville, NY) posted 26 saves and Chris D’Alvise (Mississauga, ONT) provided the scoring as Clarkson University ran its unbeaten streak to a current NCAA-best nine games (7-0-2) with a 1-1 overtime tie against Cornell University before 3,255 fans in ECAC Hockey League action at Cheel Arena. Ranked 9th in the nation coming into the weekend, Clarkson, which also skated to a 1-1 draw against Colgate on Friday, owns a 13-5-3 overall record and is in a three-way tie for fourth in the ECACHL with a 5-2-2 league mark.
Cornell, ranked 14th in the nation, snapped a three-game losing skid and owns a 9-6-2 overall record and a 5-3-2, fourth-place ECACHL slate.
D’Alvise opened the scoring with his 7th goal of the season midway through the first period. Positioned at the top of the crease, the sophomore center tipped in a lofting shot by senior Mike Sullivan (Stouffville, ONT) during a scramble in front at 13:02. Senior defenseman Michael Grenzy (Lockport, NY) also assisted.
Clarkson’s string of successful penalty kills came to an end at 18 when the Big Red tied the score midway through the second period on their fifth power-play of the game. Mitch Carefoot snapped in a quick shot from the side of the net, converting off a pass through the slot by Colin Greening at 13:27 for his sixth goal of the year. Topher Scott also set up the man-advantage marker with his team-high 13th assist of the year.
Cornell out shot the Knights 27-22, including a 9-3 margin over the final 25 minutes, but Leggio, who has allowed just 11 goals during Clarkson’s current nine-game unbeaten stretch, was up to the task during aside several grade “A” scoring chances by the Big Red.
Troy Davenport was equally strong in the Cornell goal with 21 stops, including 18 through the first 40 minutes.
Clarkson, which entered the weekend with the second-ranked power play in the country, went scoreless for the weekend with the man advantage after a 0-of-6 effort against Cornell. The Big Red finished 1-of-8 on the power play.
