Knights Stay Close Verus #5 William Smith, But Fall 3-1

Geneva, NY - Despite a late goal from senior Alicia Chace (Cortland, NY), the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team was unable to handle fifth-ranked William Smith on Saturday afternoon as the Golden Knights fell 3-1 in Liberty League action.

The Knights fell to 3-8-2 overall and 0-5-1 in conference while William Smith remained unbeaten at 13-0-1 and 5-0-1 in the Liberty League. Clarkson closes out the Liberty League conference schedule on Sunday when it faces Hamilton.

After a scoreless first half, the Herons put their first point on the board in the 54th minute. Sophomore midfielder Jillian Harris netted her first career goal, heading in a crossed ball from senior forward Laura Burnett-Kurie.

At 66:09, junior midfielder Rayza Santiago passed the ball to classmate Julia Bernay on the end line to the right of the goal. Bernay’s attempt to cross the ball curved into the goal to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. A few minutes later, forward Brelynn Nasypany scored her 10th goal of the season to put the Herons up 3-0. Nasypany beat a defender and Clarkson goalkeeper Meagan Emlaw (Norfolk, NY) for the unassisted tally.

The Golden Knights tried to mount a comeback, as Alicia Chace scored on a cross from classmate Catie Reed (Lafayette, NY) in the 73rd minute, but would Clarkson would get no closer.

William Smith out shot the Knights 24-7, and took six corner kicks to Clarkson's two. Emlaw finished with eight saves for Clarkson.
