Early Goal Enough as Skidmore Defeats Clarkson, 1-0

October 5, 2007

Potsdam, NY - Senior goalkeeper Meagan Emlaw (Norfolk, NY) made nine saves on Friday afternoon for the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team, but unfortunately one shot made it past the goal line as Skidmore downed the Golden Knights 1-0 in Liberty League action at Clarkson Field.

The Golden Knights dropped to 1-6-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the Liberty League while Skidmore jumped over .500 with the win, improving to 5-4-2 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play. Clarkson finishes out the Liberty League home slate on Saturday when it hosts Union College.

The lone goal of the game came at the 17:49 mark of the first half when a cross was sent across the penalty area by Anna Cerio. That ball was deflected slightly be Emlaw, but the ball found the foot of sophomore Abbey Sumas, who scored her first goal of the year when she was able to tap the ball past Emlaw and into the back of the net.

Though Skidmore would hold a strong edge in shots, 17-3, the better of the chances came for the Golden Knights in the second half. Midway through the period, Catie Reed (Lafayette, NY) sent a soaring ball into the box off a corner kick and the ball bounced around in close for a few seconds before it was cleared by the Skidmore defense. About 10 minutes later, Courtney Donovan (South Hero, VT) found herself alone against the goalkeeper and cleared the last defense, but Donovan's shot from 20 yards out hit the underside of the crossbar and came back out without another scoring chance for the Knights.

Skidmore held a 9-0 edge in shots in the first half and an 8-3 lead in the second half. The Thoroughbreds also led in corners 2-1. Emlaw made nine saves for Clarkson, most of which came on hard groundballs from 15 yards out or more. Liza Mills needed to stop just one shot on goal, during the Knights' corner kick chance, to earn her fifth shutout of the season.
