Troy, NY - After a scoreless first half, Rensselaer responded with two goals in teh final 45 minutes to post a 2-0 Liberty League victory over the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights dropped their fifth straight conference game and fell to 5-7-1 overall, while Rensselaer remained unbeaten in the Liberty League at 4-0-0, and moved to 9-2-1 overall. The Knights have almost two full weeks off from games and will return to action with a three-game homestand to close out the season starting on October 24th.
Rensselaer out shot Clarkson 17-1 in the first half, but was unable to score against senior goalkeeper Mike St. Croix (Watertown, NY). It wasn't until the second half that the Red Hawks got on the scoreboard. In the 56th minute, senior Jabel Prom blasted a volley from the top of the penalty area just under the crossbar for the 1-0 lead. Prom picked up the loose ball after the Knights failed to clear an RPI corner.
Sophomore Bryce Hutchinson gave RPI a 2-0 advantage in the 71st minute. He turned around his defender at the top of the penalty area and finished low, just inside the right post.
Rensselaer finished with a 28-6 edge in shots, including 8-2 in shots on goal. The Red Hawks also held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks. St. Croix finished with six saves for Clarkson, while Alex Penny (one save) and Mike Prince (one save) combined for the shutout for RPI.
