Late Goals End Clarkson Hopes of Upset at Union

October 26, 2008

Schenectady, NY - Jocelyn Veilleux scored two goals in the final three-plus minutes to end any hopes of a comeback by the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team as Union downed the Golden Knights 5-1 in the final Liberty League contest of the season Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights, who close out the regular season this week against Oswego State, moved to 4-11-2 overall and 0-7-0 in conference action. Union landed itself the second seed in the upcoming playoffs, improving to 13-3-1 overall and 6-1 in league games.

Union had control of the contest from the beginning, but was unable to put a goal on the scoreboard until the 29th minute. Allison Cuozzo cored on a header off a corner kick with the assist going to Katie Weinstein to put the Dutchwomen up 1-0 midway through the half. Clarkson was hanging tough with the Dutchwomen, but a goal with just 25 seconds left in the half pushed the lead to 2-0 when Cuozzo scored on a breakaway, with the assist again going to Weinstein.

The 70th minute had Union scoring again with Cuozzo setting up teammate Bianca Germain with a touch pass. The Knights had thoughts of a comeback just 10 minutes later, though, as Alix Petitti (Amsterdam, NY) scored her first collegiate goal. Petitti won the ball in the penalty box and then scored in the upper corner, unassisted, to pull the Knights within two. A pair of scores by Veilleux, both assisted by Rachel Schneidman, ended any hopes of Clarkson completing the comeback.

Caitlin Titus (Dewitt, NY) made four saves in 90 minutes for the Knights while Abby Stohler and Melissa McDonald combined to make one save for Union.
