Potsdam, NY - Four players finished in double-figures for the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team as the Golden Knights topped 80 points for the first time since 2004 in an 80-66 victory over SUNY Canton Wednesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Golden Knights improved to 2-1 overall with their victory, while Canton fell to 0-4. Clarkson will get the weekend off from games, but the Knights will play Tuesday at Plattsburgh State.
The Knights took little time establishing a superiority on the interior as junior Michelle Reddinger (Baldwinsville, NY) made three easy lay ups in the first four minutes and Clarkson raced out to a 22-4 lead through the first eight minutes. Canton would cut that lead in half with several free throws as Clarkson’s aggressiveness on defense was called frequently in the paint. Though the Knights would push the lead back to as many as 15 points, the Kangaroos once again proved difficult to put away, cutting the advantage to as few as seven late in the half. A 3-pointer from the corner by freshman Carey Turner (Clifton Park, NY) in the final minute of the half gave the Knights a double-digit advantage.
Reddinger finished the first half with 12 points, shooting 6-for-7 from the floor. Turner also added in eight points and five rebounds for Clarkson. For Canton, Brittany Kenyon was a flawless shooter, going 3-for-3 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
In the second half, Clarkson was able to maintain its double-digit throughout the second half, as a lot of long range shots went down for the Golden Knights. The Kangaroos made a run in the final minutes, but couldn’t get the lead into single digits to truly challenge the Knights.
Reddinger finished with a team-high 16 points in just 19 minutes for the Knights. Sophomore Katie Goldberg (Stowe, VT) tossed in 12 points, shooting 4-for-6 from beyond the 3-point arc. Turner finished with 11 points and Ariana Czech (Big Bear City, CA) had 10 points.
For Canton, Kenyon closed with 14 points and Kristi Farrell added 10 points.
