Poughkeepsie, NY – A 16-4 run looked like it would be enough for the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team against Vassar on Saturday, but the Brewers responded with a 19-5 run in the final six minutes to send the Golden Knights to a 56-49 loss.
The Golden Knights fell short of the season sweep against the Brewers and finished the regular season at 3-22 overall and 1-13 in the Liberty League, while Vassar moved to 5-17 and 1-13.
Though Vassar jumped out to a 5-0 lead after a few minutes in the first half, Clarkson rallied to take the lead and the two teams traded the advantage eight more times in the half before the Brewers finally settled for a three-point lead at the conclusion of the half.
The second half was highlighted by more close play, but the Knights were able to make a solid run midway through the half, trailing by five with 10 minutes to go and turning that into a seven-point lead within the next four minutes. Vassar, however, responded by going on a 19-5 run to end the game, making three 3-pointers and 10 free throws while Clarkson could convert just two baskets and a free throw in the final six minutes.
Sierra Noles (Averill Park, NY) finished with 13 points, including a 9-for-11 performance from the free throw line, to lead Clarkson. Michelle Reddinger (Baldwinsville, NY) added 9 points and 10 rebounds and Rachel Whitermore (Holliston, MA) produced 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 blocks. Reddinger finished the season with a run of 19 consecutive free throws made, including a 5-for-5 performance on Saturday.
Elise Okusami scored 18 points to lead the Brewers, shooting 11-for-13 from the free throw line, while Chelsea Katzenburg and Ashley Sherman each added 11 points. Neither team shot well in the second half, with Clarkson making only 21.2 percent of its shots (7-for-33) and Vassar converting only 17.9 percent (5-for-28).
