September 6, 2008

Rochester, NY - Thanks to two vital defensive plays during overtime, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team held on for a 0-0 tie against 14th-ranked University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 1-2-1 overall on the season, while the Yellowjackets remained unbeaten at 2-0-2.

With five minutes left in the first extra period, J.J. Dennstedt was taken down in the box creating a penalty kick opportunity. Sean Hantes took the kick, but his drive for the top right corner was batted over the crossbar by Clarkson goalkeeper Mike St. Croix (Watertown, NY). Two minutes later, Rochester's Misha Carrel-Thomas headed a shot to the left corner that was cleared off the line by Clarkson’s Justin White (Dewitt, NY).

During regulation, Rochester goalkeeper Michael Peacock was able to shut down the Golden Knights and produced two big saves. The first save was in the 54th minute when he stopped a shot by Clarkson’s Andrew Ensinger (Rochester, NY) from the top of the box. Peacock came up big again in the 88th minute, this time on a drive from Scott Desmond (Enfield, CT).

Dennstedt also came close in the 61st minute with a shot chipped over the bar, and again in the 70th minute when he collected a cross from Sean Hantes to shoot just over the bar. Three minutes later, Dennstedt sent an off-balance shot skimming past the left upright. The Yellowjackets also had chances in the second overtime, including one with two minutes remaining when Jeremy Gaden chipped the ball from outside the penalty arc and it struck the crossbar.

St. Croix collected seven saves and earned his first shutout of the season. For Rochester, Peacock posted his fourth straight shutout. Rochester held a 23-14 edge in shots and had 17 corner kicks to Clarkson's three.
