For the second straight year, senior first baseman Matt Holiday (Syracuse, NY) gained ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America District 1 honors for the Clarkson University Baseball team, and this time around he was joined by teammate David Goerold (Clifton Park, NY), who became a first-time honoree on a long list of standout student-athletes.
Holiday, who was chosen for the District 1 Second-Team, has a 3.77 grade-point average in Financial Information Analysis and was picked as a Liberty League conference all-star for the second straight season as well. Holiday leads the team in home runs and RBIs and holds the record for most runs driven in over a two-year span with 71. It was the second straight year Holiday was chosen for the honor after being picked for the District 1 First-Team in 2008.
Goerold, who was also picked for the District 1 Second-Team, has a flawless 4.00 grade-point average, also in Financial Information Analysis, was picked as a Liberty League All-Star Honorable Mention for the first time this spring. He has a 4-2 record and a 2.08 ERA, the second best mark in the conference. He also has struck out 27 batters in 47 innings.
Holiday and Goerold are the seventh and eight players, respectively, to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors since 1982, joining JJ Lorence (2005), Matt Macaulay (2003, 2002), Matt Schwind (2003), Tim Barcomb (2002, 2001, 2000), Kris Barcomb (1998), and Matt Nachman (1998).
