While the results on the field were mixed for several Clarkson University Athletic teams this past week, numerous individuals stood out among the crowd as four athletes across four sports were picked for Liberty League Weekly Honors on Monday.
Leading the way was sophomore outside hitter Sara Artus (St. Regis Falls, NY) of the volleyball team. Artus, selected as the Most Valuable Player of the North Country Invitational, was picked as Liberty League Co-Performer of the Week, an award she shared with a player from St. Lawrence, which the Knights beat in three straight in the tournament. Artus had 63 kills during the weekend, including a career-best 25 kills against Middlebury College on Friday night, the only team that the Knights dropped a single set against. For the season, Artus easily leads the conference in total kills (116, with the next best being 75) and in kills per game (4.30, with second place coming in at 3.27).
On the soccer pitch, two players earned Liberty League Rookie of the Week honors. For the men, it was freshman Scott Stuart (Ottawa, ONT), who shared the honor with a player from Hobart. Stuart earned his first career starts in goal for the Knights and didn't disappoint, making 13 saves in 14 chances for a .929 save percentage and a 0.44 goals against average. His top performance came when he held 19th-ranked Rochester scoreless through a 0-0 tie. On the women's side, Ellen Heenan (Bridgeport, NY) scored her first career goal in a 3-0 win over Hilbert College, gaining Liberty League Rookie of the Week honors, something which she shared with another player from William Smith. Heenan helped the Knights defensively as well as the team dominated the Hawks, out shooting the opponent 34-2. Heenan herself had team highs of six shots and three shots on goal in the overwhelming victory.
For the men's cross country team, sophomore Alex Benway (Queensbury, NY) was the top collegiate runner and second finisher overall at the North Country Invitational hosted by Clarkson last Wednesday. Benway finished the 3.3 mile course in 17 minutes, 53 seconds. Benway shared the honor of Liberty League Performer of the Week with runners from both Hobart and Rensselaer.
