Elmira, NY - In the past week, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team has made a solid progression in overtime games, losing against Geneseo, tying 19th-ranked Rochester, and finally winning a contest in extra time on Friday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over previously unbeaten Elmira College.
The Golden Knights improved to 4-2-1 overall, ending a three-game winless streak (0-2-1) against some of the top teams in New York. The Soaring Eagles dropped their first decision of the season, falling to 3-1 overall. Clarkson will face RIT tomorrow.
It took some time for the Golden Knights to become acclimated to Elmira's smaller pitch, and the Soaring Eagles took advantage of Clarkson's youthful squad, most of which had never played at Elmira prior to Friday. Kevin McKearney started the scoring for Elmira, picking up a goal on a header off a corner kick from Brian Maschke at 22:32. However, the Knights tied the score up 1-1 when sophomore Brian Buckner (Farmington, NY) scored on a shot over top of the Elmira goalie's head. Classmate David Maiorino (Holbrook, NY) earned the assist.
After a closely played first half (Elmira led in shots and corner kicks, 12-8 and 6-1, respectively), the Knights dominated the remainder of the contest. Clarkson out shot the Soaring Eagles in the second half by a wide margin (12-3), but was unable to find the go-ahead score among those attempts on goal.
Clarkson's first shots on goal in the first overtime proved more fruitful as Buckner scored his second goal of the contest and third of the year when he deposited a rebound into the net for a Knights' victory. Sophomore Elliott Carter (Ottawa, ONT) started the play with a shot on goal that bounced out to Buckner for the winning shot and goal.
Starting his third game of the season, freshman Scott Stuart (Ottawa, ONT) made eight saves in his first collegiate victory. Jared Micheller made 10 saves for Elmira in the loss.
