Potsdam, NY - Making the most of its early scoring opportunities, Elmira College jumped out to a 3-0 first-half lead and held off the Clarkson University Women’s Soccer team to gain a 3-1 road win on Saturday afternoon in Potsdam.
The Golden Knights, who fall to 2-3 overall, host RIT on Sunday in a 12 noon game at Clarkson Field.
The Soaring Eagles (3-2) took a 2-0 lead 13 minutes into the contest. Kristyn O’Rourke tallied her first of the year, unassisted at 7:42, followed by Rachael Bromson’s team-high sixth goal of the season at 12:59 off an assist by Kaitlin Borrelli
Caitlin Eno connected off an assist from Kelsey Kiel to put the Soaring Eagles up 3-0 with 11 minutes left in the half.
Clarkson, which had good pressure throughout the game, finally got on the scoreboard in the 60th minute as sophomore Emily Garrant (Marcellus, NY) took a pass in the box from senior Megan Bicknell (Potsdam, NY) and scored off a low shot for her first career goal.
The Knights out shot Elmira 17-13 and held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
Junior Stephanie Collins (Colton, NY) was strong in goal coming in off the Clarkson bench, making five saves on six shots through 73 minutes of action. Less than a minute after relieving starter, junior Alex Sullivan (Copenhagen, NY), Collins made a stop on a penalty kick by Elmira’s Danielle Corjulo.
Karissa Wilson posted seven saves for the Soaring Eagles.
