Though the team trained in Florida in mid-December, the Clarkson University Swim team hasn't done much competing since six weeks ago, but their was little rust on the Golden Knights on Saturday as several individuals posted strong performances at Rensselaer's Kumpf Invitational.
Clarkson finished in fourth overall with 265.5 points. Cortland State was first, followed by Ithaca and Rensselaer. The bottom three squads were Vassar, Oneonta State and Skidmore.
Sophomore Mike Rowe (Glenville, NY) led the way with a first-place finish in the 200 backstroke (1:57.33) and a second-place showing in the 200 freestyle (1:49.17). Freshman Sean Parnett (Clifton Park, NY) also had a pair of top-five showings with a third in the 200 butterfly (2:03.02) and a fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:07.70). Junior Brendan Hofler (Glen Gardner, NJ) also had two top-10s with a third in the 100 freestyle (10:37.31) and a seventh in the 500 freestyle (5:10.01).
Five other swimmers finished in the top 10 in their individual events. Devin Hallam (Schenectady, NY) came in seventh in the 50 freestyle (23.07) while Paul Telesca (Liverpool, NY) was ninth in the 100 freestyle (51.36) and Aaron Cubells (Hamden, CT) was ninth in the 200 backstroke (2:10.41). Bob Stevens (Lakewood, NY) came in 10th in the 100 freestyle (51.77) and Aaron Kreher (Clarence, NY) was 10th in the 1000 freestyle (11:12.08).
The 400 freestyle relay team of Hallam, Rowe, Stevens and Telesca came in fourth with a time of 3:23.50, while the 400 medley relay team of Stevens, Parnett, Dan Mandle (North Chelmsford, MA) and Mitchell Maciuba (Clarence, NY) came in seventh in 3:55.35.
