Clarkson Opens Six-Game Home Stand with Weekend Series vs Alabama-Huntsville

PDF file of weekely release

With a healthy slate of home games filling the 2010 portion of the schedule, the Clarkson University Hockey team will look to use the friendly confines of Cheel Arena as a boost in its bid to turn the season around.

After playing only six of their first 18 games in Potsdam, the Golden Knights will host 10 games at Cheel in the season’s second half. The Green and Gold, who have made two plane trips to Minnesota and a lengthy bus ride to East Lansing MI, will play only two contests (at Brown and Yale on February 19-20) outside of New York for the remaining 16 games of the regular season.

The Golden Knights, guided by seventh-year head coach George Roll and associate coach Greg Drechsel, will open a six-game home stand this weekend when they host Alabama-Huntsville in the final non-conference games on the schedule. Both contests are slated for a 7:00 p.m. faceoff.

After a challenging opening half of the season, which included road series at nationally-ranked Michigan State and Minnesota-Duluth along with single game encounters against Top-10 rated Quinnipiac and Boston College on their home ice, Clarkson struggled to start the New Year on a winning note.

This past weekend out in Minneapolis, after a 27-day layoff, the Knights dropped two games at the Dodge Holiday Classic, hosted by the University of Minnesota. Playing on the Olympic-size ice sheet (200’x100’) at Mariucci Arena, Clarkson was shut out by Northern Michigan, 4-0, in first round action on Saturday, and then lost a one-goal game to Bowling Green, 4-3, in Sunday’s consolation contest.

Clarkson owns a 4-12-2 overall record and will be looking to break out of a six-game winless stretch (0-4-2) when they host the Chargers this weekend. The Knights have not won since rallying for a 3-2 victory at Dartmouth on November 20.

ECAC Hockey play resumes for the Green and Gold on January 15-16 when Central NY rivals Cornell and Colgate travel to the North Country. Clarkson is in 11th place in the conference standings with a 1-5-2 league mark.

Senior assistant captain Matt Beca (Mississauga, ONT), who tallied a goal and one assist against Bowling Green, leads the Clarkson offense with 18 points, including a team-high nine goals. His goal against the Falcons came shorthanded and was his 40th career goal. Beca has 103 career points through 130 games. Junior captain Scott Freeman (Whitby, ONT), who also tallied a goal on Sunday, is the Knights’ second-leading scorer with 16 points and is tied for the team lead in assists with 12.

Alabama-Huntsville owns a 5-10-1 overall record, but has gone 2-1-1 in its last four games. The only loss for head coach Danton Cole’s squad since late November was a one-goal defeat to Vermont when the Catamounts defeated the Chargers 4-3 in the opening round of the Catamount Cup in Burlington this past Saturday. UAH came back in the consolation contest on Sunday with its most impressive win of the season, a 4-1 victory over Mercyhurst. In the last season of College Hockey America, the Chargers are tied for third in the four-team league with a 1-4-1 conference mark. Alabama-Huntsville, which is looking to join one of the other five leagues next season, is scheduled to play as an Independent in 2010-11.
