West Mountain – Sophomore JP Phaneuf (Montreal, QUE) swept both the giant slalom and slalom events this past weekend as the Clarkson University Alpine Ski team closed out its USCSA Adirondack Division schedule with another pair of first place finishes at the Skidmore Invitational.
The Golden Knights’ men won the giant slalom by nine seconds and the women repeated the margin in their race on Saturday as well. Sunday’s slalom events were even more lopsided for the Knights, as the men won by 14 seconds and the women came in first by an overwhelming 23 seconds.
Phaneuf dominated both races, winning the giant slalom in 1:33.63, a second and a half better than teammate David Simon (Montvale, NJ), who finished in second in the event. Sophomore Cedrik Proteau-Dubois (Ste-Adele, QUE) came in fourth in 1:35.70 while Drew Bonner (Killington, VT) was sixth and John Bennett (Queensbury, NY) came in seventh as Clarkson clearly held the advantage on Saturday. On Sunday, Phaneuf again paced the field with a time of 1:40.44 in the slalom while Proteau-Dubois came in fourth at 1:43.96 and Bonner finished fifth in 1:44.49.
Sophomores Jill Clevenger (LaGrangeville, NY) and Sophie LeBlanc (Cumberland, ME) each won individual titles over the weekend for the women, as Clevenger came in first in the giant slalom in 1:41.50 and LeBlanc was fastest in the slalom at 1:52.77. Junior Meghan Cleason (Canandaigua, NY) came in second in both events. Clevenger also finished fifth in the slalom while LeBlanc came in 22nd in the giant slalom. Senior Emma Masur (Wayne, NJ) finished 11th in the giant slalom and 17th in the slalom.
