Potsdam, NY – Completing a suspended game from Saturday, the University of Rochester used a seven-run eighth inning to defeat the Clarkson University Baseball team 10-2 on Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Knights fell to 15-13 overall and 11-7 in the Liberty League, while Rochester moved to 27-9 and 18-4 in conference games.
Rochester scored all of its runs in just two frames, capitalizing on numerous mistakes by the Golden Knights. The Yellowjackets scored three times in the first as Clarkson struggled to field the opposition’s bunts. The game was halted due to rain in the top of the fourth inning Saturday afternoon before being resumed on Sunday.
Clarkson didn’t get on the scoreboard until the sixth inning when the Knights also used an error to get their first run. Sam Grainger (Bedford, MA) placed a sacrifice bunt in front of the mound, but the Rochester pitcher threw the ball away at second base in an attempt at a force play. Following another sacrifice by Pete Clarke (Tully, NY), Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY) delivered a two-run single to pull Clarkson to within a run.
The eighth inning saw Rochester score seven times on just two hits as a combination of errors and walks put an end to any hope of a comeback. The ball barely left the infield on a soft single after the Yellowjackets had batted around.
Rochester’s Saturday starter Nate Kowal was awarded the victory while Jon Menke’s six innings of relief on Sunday earned him the save. Alex Giovannone (New Hartford, NY), who had settled in after a tough first inning, took the loss after pitching three innings on Saturday.
Matt Francis and Casey Storme each went 2-for-4 to lead Rochester, while Chris Falteisek (Baldwinsville, NY) and Jerry Coleman each had a pair of hits for the Knights.
