Senior Alex Benway (Queensbury, NY) put in a strong showing at the 2011 NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Cross Country Championship held at St. Lawrence University on Saturday morning with a Top 10 finish.
Benway covered the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25:25.4 for an eight-place showing. With his strong showing Benway qualifies for the NCAA Division III Championships in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on November 19.
The Golden Knight Men finished 16 out of 40 teams with 445 points. Lee Berube of Geneseo State was the regional individual champion with a time of 24:41.3. St. Lawrence won the team title with 89 points.
Benway finished eighth overall out of 272 runners to lead the Knights, but several other runners posted outstanding results as well. Junior Pat Carroll (Queensbury, NY) came in 81st overall in 26:59.5 and classmate Andrew Gelston (White Plains, NY) was 107th overall in 27:30.5. Senior Neal Campbell (Queensbury, NY) ran the event in 27:35.7 to finish in 116th, and sophomore Dan Fritz (Cicero, NY) came in 136th for the Knights to round out the scoring.
Senior Maureen Hill (Latham, NY) paced the Clarkson Women, finishing in 119th place, out of 256 runners, with a time of 24:45.7 over the 6,000-meter course at St. Lawrence. The Knights placed 27 out of 36 teams with 777 points.
Hill was closely followed by junior Rachel Bachman (Queensbury, NY) in 134th place with a time of 25:14.2. Senior Audrey Keene (Hilton, NY) came in 165th in 25:53.0. A pair of underclassmen rounded out the scoring for Clarkson, with freshman Sarah Governale (Wading River, NY) placing 184th and sophomore Erin Corrigan (Remsen, NY) finishing in 192nd.
Stefanie Braun of Plattsburgh State won the women’s title with a time of 21:52.1. The host Saints won the team title with 77 points
