Potsdam, NY – If the season-opener is any indication, the Clarkson University Men’s Lacrosse team will have a formidable offense for opponents as nine different players scored at least one goal in a 17-13 victory over Oneonta State Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

Despite less than hospitable conditions, with a steady rain and wind accompanying the temperature hovering just above 40 degrees, neither team had much trouble on offense. The two teams combined for over 80 shots, but the start of the game was slow going. It took over seven minutes before one team could get on the board when Bryan Huff’s (Hillsborough, NJ) dribbled across the end line to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead. Oneonta midfielder Brian Kollar scored in a similar fashion with an extra attacker a few minutes later to tie things up, and the Red Dragons would take their only lead of the game with 2:14 to go in the first period on a hard shot from Scott Kellman. However, the Knights tied the game up in the final minute and pushed ahead with 16.2 seconds left before the Red Dragons knotted the game up immediately after the faceoff.

The offensive outburst would continue at the start of the second quarter. Matt Cyr (Cheshire, CT) and Jeff Sciera (DeWitt, NY) scored within one minute of one another for Clarkson, and Pat Kilday (Westford, MA) immediately won the faceoff after Sciera’s goal and scored to make the score 6-3 in Clarkson’s favor. Oneonta’s Jimmy van de Veerdonk did the same after Kilday’s goal as the two teams finished off a steak that produced seven goals in a 3:14 span.

Following a nine-minute scoring drought, it appeared as if Clarkson was asserting itself and taking advantage of the contest when the Knights scored two goals in succession late in the first half to move the lead to 8-4, but the Red Dragons responded with two scores in the final minutes, including a man-down score from van de Veerdonk, to pull back to within two, 8-6, at halftime.

In the third quarter, Clarkson tried to shake the Red Dragons, but Oneonta would not go away, responding with goals each time the Knights pushed their advantage. The Red Dragons erased the deficit entirely with back-to-back goals from Kollar midway through the fourth quarter, making the score 13-13. However, the Knights received goals from Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY), Cyr, Eric Gollands (Chelmsford, MA) and Mike Fowler (Modena, NY) over a five-minute stretch to finally oust the Dragons.

The 17-goal outburst by Clarkson was the most that the team has scored since the 2007 season when the Knights exploded for 19 scores versus Plattsburgh State, a stretch of 53 games. Huff led the team with five points on three goals and two assists, while Sciera scored three times as well. Cyr, Gollands, McCabe and Fowler each added a pair of goals, with Fowler also assisting on a score. Kilday, Mike Simmons (Clinton, CT) and Brendon Shearin (Goffstown, NH) also scored once for the Knights. Junior Matt Davidson (Hilton, NY) led Clarkson with five groundballs, and freshman Rick Clement (Cotuit, MA) had four groundballs, as did Huff and Kilday. Clarkson’s sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) made 10 saves.

For Oneonta, van de Veerdonk had five points with four goals and an assist and the sophomore midfielder also added a game-high 12 groundballs. Brian Kollar scored six points on four goals and two assists, and Scott Kellman added three goals. John DeOrdio also contributed three points, scoring two goals and assisting on another. Chris Miles and Sean Reynolds combined to make 15 saves.
