Catano Gains Liberty League Weekly Honors for Fourth Time

Senior Al Catano (Ronkonkoma, NY) of the Clarkson University Swim team earned Liberty League Performer of the Week honors on Monday after a dominating effort at the Liberty League Championships this past weekend.

Catano, chosen Liberty League Swimmer of the Year at the conference championships, won three individual events and placed third in another. On Friday, he captured the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:56.80, winning by more than three seconds, and he followed that up with a strong performance the following day. On Saturday, he started the day with a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:45.11), but he broke a pair of pool records later in the day in the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke. In the 100 backstroke he finished in first with a time of 51.91 seconds, topping a nine-year-old league meet mark and a 21-year-old pool record. His performance in the 200 backstroke set another pool mark and was just a tenth of a second short of breaking the meet record as well. In the 100 backstroke he was nearly three-quarters of a second faster than the rest of the field and he was 1.73 seconds faster than all other participants in the 200 backstroke.

Catano has been chosen as the conference's top performer in four of the past five weeks.
