Clarkson Completes 4-Pt Weekend at Cheel with 1-0 Win over Yale for Second Straight Shutout

With a 25-save effort from junior Greg Lewis (Mars, PA) and a timely goal by freshman Sam Vigneault (Baie-Comeau, QUE) the Clarkson University Hockey team completed a four-point weekend by earning its second straight shutout with Saturday's 1-0 victory over 13th-ranked Yale in Potsdam. The Golden Knights opened a five-game home stand at Cheel Arena on Friday with a 6-0 win over Brown.

Winners of three straight for the first time this season, Clarkson improves its record to 10-11-4 overall and takes over sole possession of fourth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 7-4-2 league mark. The Green and Gold, who are just two points out of second place and four shy of the conference top spot, host archrival St. Lawrence next Saturday.

After winning with plenty of offensive firepower on Friday, Clarkson scored just once on Saturday against the nation's top-ranked defense, but that was all the Knights would need as Lewis stretched his shutout streak in net to 147:45 to earn his fourth career whitewash.

The Knights outshot Yale (11-6-2, 6-5-1) 30-25 as they completed the regular-season series against the Bulldogs by taking three of four points. Clarkson and the Bulldogs tied 2-2 in New Haven, CT on November 7.

Clarkson controlled play in the opening stanza outshooting the Bulldogs 13-4, and did not allow Yale a shot on net until 5:50 remainded in the first period.

The Knights scored the game's lone goal with 1:28 left in the second period. Vigneault took a pass from sophomore Troy Josephs (Whitby, ONT) at the bottom of the right circle and slid a shot underneath the pads of Yale goaltender Alex Lyon for his fifth goal of the season. Freshman Brett Gervais (Corona, CA) started the play with a pass to Josephs in the neutral zone.

Making his fourth start of the season, Lewis needed to post just four saves through the opening 20 minutes, but faced a tougher time in the second and third periods with 11 and 10 stops, respectively. Lewis becomes the first Clarkson goaltender to post shutouts in consecutive games since Karl Mattson '02 achieved the feat in February 2000.

Clarkson went scoreless in its lone power-play opportunity and killed off both of Yale's man-advantage chances.
