Clarkson Falls 62-46 in North Country Invitational Basketball Opener

Potsdam, NY - Senior Felix Abongo hit a mid-range runner in the lane late in the second half to score his 1000th career point as a member of the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team, but his effort wasn't enough to help the Golden Knights pick up their first win of the season as the team fell to SUNY Canton 62-46 in the North Country Invitational opener.

The Golden Knights fell to 0-3 on the season and will face either SUNYIT or Potsdam State at 1:00 pm on Saturday. SUNY Canton will take on the winner of the aforementioned game at 3:00 pm.

Clarkson jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first minute, but SUNY Canton scored nine of the next 11 points in the following three points and never relinquished the lead. Clarkson was within one point a few minutes later (15-14), but the Kangaroos slowly added to their advantage in the next 14 minutes, eventually pushing the margin to 11 points. The Knights offense scored 12 points in the final 14 minutes of the first half, but intermission didn't get things going in the second half. A lay up by Conrad Zampier at the 16:27 mark was the only basket that the Knights got in the first seven minutes of the second half until Derek Hart converted a short shot at 12:21. By that point, the Roos were up by 17 and a few moments later extended their lead to 21. Clarkson would find a bit of a rhythm in the waning moments and chipped the deficit down to 16 points, but could get no closer.

Abongo finished with 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals while Derek Hart added 15 points, shooting 7-for-14 from the floor, five rebounds and three blocks. Jeremy Liss also tossed in nine points, going 3-for-3 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the free throw line, with six boards, two assists and two steals. For SUNY Canton, Sam Annorh had a team-best 15 points to go along with seven boards and four assists. Romario Fletcher also produced 11 points and seven boards and Khalil Bratton contributed 10 points on 5-for-8 shooting.
