Knights Suffer Loss in Men's Hockey at Princeton

Goals in ECAC Hockey play continue to be tough to come by for the Clarkson University Hockey team as the Golden Knights suffered a 3-0 loss to Princeton at Hobey Baker Rink in New Jersey on Saturday night.

Entering the weekend ranked 20th in the country, the Knights skated to a hard-earned 1-1 tie against the 2nd-ranked team in the country, Quinnipiac on Friday in Hamden, CT, but could not match that effort on Saturday at Princeton. Clarkson, which has scored only four goals in its first five ECAC Hockey games, stands at 0-3-2 in the conference and 5-4-2 overall. The Knights break from league play mext weekend as they host Division I Independent Arizona State in a two-game set at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson outshot Princeton 31-24, but the Tigers controlled the opening 20 minutes and set the game's pace in the first period with a 10-5 shot advantage.

Princeton (2-6, 1-5) tallied a goal in each period to pick up its first ECAC Hockey win of the season.

Six seconds after Clarkson killed off the first power-play of the game, Princeton took advantage of the Knights in transition and scored the opening goal at 12:55 off the stick of Eric Robinson.

The Tigers made it 2-0 early in the middle frame on a goal by Kyle Rankin at 1:57.

Princeton sealed its second consecutive win over the Green and Gold at Hobey Baker Rink with only its second power-play goal of the season, and first in league play, at 11:55 of the final stanza with Max Veronneau connecting. It was also only the first power-play goal allowed by the Knights in ECAC Hockey play.

Junior Steve Perry made 21 saves for Clarkson, while Colton Phinney finished with 31 stops in the Princeton crease.

Clarkson was 0-of-2 on the power play, while the Tigers were 1-of-5 with the man-advantage.
