Clarkson Suffers Another One-Goal Loss

Sophomore A.J. Fossen (Maple Grove, MN) scored two goals, but the Clarkson University Hockey team could not recover from an early deficit and suffered its ninth one-goal loss of the season as 14-ranked Harvard edged the Green and Gold 3-2 in the final regular season game at Cheel Arena on Saturday night.

Clarkson, which has lost four straight, owns an 11-17-4 overall record and an eighth-place 8-10-2 ECAC Hockey mark. The Golden Knights close out the regular season at Rensselaer and Union next weekend. With one point against Rensselaer next Friday, Clarkson would secure home ice for the first round of the upcoming conference playoffs.

Harvard (14-9-3, 10-7-3) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. Seb Lloyd started the scoring 2:55 in, finishing off assists from Tyler Moy and Victory Newell. The Crimson struck again with a power-play marker from Max Everson at 6:13.

The Knights got on the scoreboard at 11:55 when Fossen flipped in a shot from the top of the crease after being set up by linemates sophomore Troy Josephs (Whitby, ONT) and freshman Sam Vigneault (Baie-Comeau, QUE) for his second goal of the weekend.

Jimmy Vesey gave the visitors a two-goal cushion early in the middle frame.  The Crimson's leading scorer stole the puck at center ice and raced in a for a breakaway, and tallied in his team-high 20th goal of the season (second best in Division I) at 4:41 to give Harvard a 3-1 lead.

Fossen gave Clarkson some momentum in the final period as he finished off a beautiful cross-ice pass from freshman defenseman Terrance Amorosa (Kirkland, QUE) for his fourth goal of the season at 11:34. Josephs also set up the goal for his second assist of the night.

The Knights, pulled sophomore goaltender Steve Perry (Ligonier, PA) for the extra attacked with 1:58 remaining, but despite some intense pressure in the waning moments could not come up with the equalizer.

Clarkson outshot the Crimson 35-21, including a 13-3 margin over the final 20 minutes.

Perry, making his first appearance since suffering an injury in the first period against Colgate on January 9, made 18 saves. Steve Michalek posted 33 stops to backstop Harvard to its sixth straight win in Potsdam.

Harvard went 1-of-4 on the power play, while Clarkson was 0-of-3 with the man-advantage.
