CU Softball Preview - at Union College (4/16)

Thursday will be take-two on an attempt for the Clarkson University Softball team and Union College to faceoff as the two teams look to jockey for position in the Liberty League standings.

The Golden Knights and Dutchwomen were scheduled to play two weeks ago, but rain and snow postponed the contest until Thursday. Clarkson enters the game with a record of 15-4 overall and 1-1 in Liberty League play, while the Dutchwomen are 7-12 overall and 2-2 in conference games. Union won both contests last year, 6-0 and 14-0.

Last year Union was one of the top offenses in the conference with a .315 batting average, .460 slugging percentage, 6.3 runs per game, and 25 home runs. That output has been muted so far in 2015 as the Dutchwomen rank sixth in the league in hitting (.227), slugging (.291) and on-base percentage (.310) and are averaging just 3.2 runs per game. Much of that offense comes off the bat of Allyson Staats, who is hitting .389, the eighth best figure in the league. Her rate statistics of .484 on-base percentage (fifth) and .574 slugging (seventh) are even better in the conference rankings and she leads the team with 13 runs scored. Camille Corbin is the next leading hitter for the Dutchwomen, batting .268 with a .446 slugging percentage thanks to two home runs. Staats is also the team's top pitcher, with a 2.87 earned run average and 72 strikeouts against just 16 walks. Her 97.2 innings pitched are the most in the league so far, and she has tossed three shutouts.

Clarkson hasn't allowed a run in the last 19 frames, thanks in part to a six-inning perfect game by Jamie Bridge on Tuesday. The sophomore hurler leads the conference with a 1.21 earned run average and is third in the league with 80 strikeouts despite ranking only sixth in innings pitched. Her 80-7 strikeout-to-walk ratio is far and away the best in the league (11.4 K/BB) and opponents are hitting just .200 against her, the second-best mark in the Liberty League. Classmate Katie Pelton is third in the league in earned run average (1.92) and also has excelled with her control, striking out five hitter for every walk allowed (55K/11BB), the third-best rate in the league. The duo has combined for an ERA of 1.55, which ranks in the top 15 in the country, and also the combo is striking out 7.5 hitters for every walk given up.

The Knights' offense has also been clicking, ranking second in the conference in batting average (.319), slugging (.410), and on-base percentage (.403), as well as runs per game (6.3 rpg) and stolen bases (36). Freshman Chelsea Elliott extended her hitting streak to 13 games after Tuesday's contests, and is just percentage points out of the batting lead for the conference, hitting .459 overall with 28 hits (also second) and 16 RBI (tied for third). During her 13-game hitting streak, Elliott is batting .548 (23-for-42). Overall, her on-base percentage (.514, second) and slugging average (.590, fifth) are also among the league leaders. Raeanna Dunn is batting .407, fifth in the conference, and Ali Schwenzfeier is hitting .387, the ninth-best average in the league. Schwenzfeier also ranks second with 17 RBI, one of three Clarkson players along with Elliott and Erika Jensen (15 RBI) that rank in the top five in that category. Freshman Summer Lancette has been a sparkplug near the top of the lineup for the Knights, leading the Liberty League in runs scored (21) and stolen bases (10) while ranking second in walks (13).
