Clarkson Opens Season With 2-0 Victory Over Potsdam

For the sixth consecutive year, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team opens its season with a victory. This year saw the Golden Knights defeat the Potsdam State Bears 2-0 at Hantz Turf Field on Tuesday night.

Clarkson improves its record to 1-0 while Potsdam falls to 0-1.

Both teams would start slowly, with just two shots being taken in the first 20 minutes. However, that would change in the 20th minute. Clarkson won its first corner of the game and from it, Paige Spittler rose to meet Nikki Carfi's cross and headed the ball into the back of the net. It was the first collegiate goal of Spittler's career.

With two minutes left in the first half, Potsdam thought they had scored the equalizer from a corner kick of their own. The ball was swung into the back post where Rylie Murray was there to meet it. Her header glanced off the crossbar though and the Clarkson defense was able to clear the ball off the line to ensure their lead still stood heading into halftime.

Potsdam would be the more offensive of the two teams in the beginning of the second half, with the Bears taking six shots compared to Clarkson's two. Green and Gold goalkeeper Anna Demasi was up to the challenge though, as she made four saves in the period.

It would be Clarkson who got the second goal of the game. In the 68th minute, Madison Kather headed the ball into the box and Lauren Flynn was able to come away with the ball and shoot it past a diving Potsdam keeper to make the score 2-0.

Demasi would finish with six saves in her first career shutout while Potsdam goalkeeper Bri Thibeau had one stop. Potsdam held an overall 10-5 edge in shots and both teams had two corner kicks apiece.

Clarkson's next game will be at home when the Golden Knights host Marywood University at 3:00 pm on Saturday in the first round of the North Country Classic.
