CU Women's Soccer Preview - vs Marywood/Plattsburgh (9/5 & 9/6)

Victoria Goudreau made her first collegiate start against Potsdam
For the sixth consecutive year, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team won their season opening game. A goal in each half gave the Golden Knights a 2-0 victory over neighboring Potsdam State on Tuesday night at Hantz Turf Field. Clarkson will try to extend their winning streak this weekend with two games in the North Country Classic. First, Clarkson will host Marywood University in a 3:00 pm game on Saturday afternoon and then will host Plattsburgh State in a 2:00 pm game on Sunday.

Clarkson came into Tuesday's game with Potsdam with two streaks on the line. The Green and Gold had not lost the first game of their season since 2008 and had beaten the Bears five consecutive times. 20 minutes into the game, Paige Spittler headed in Nikki Carfi's corner kick and Clarkson never looked back. Clarkson added a second goal in the 68th minute when Madison Kather headed a ball into the box and Lauren Flynn was there to knock it into the net.

In the 2014 edition of the North Country Classic, Clarkson came away with a 1-1 record. In the first game, Clarkson defeated Colby-Sawyer 1-0 in double overtime. Carfi scored the game-winning goal in the 106th minute of that game. The next day, the Golden Knights would fall 3-0 to Plattsburgh State. Nonetheless, Flynn, Kanoe Eichholz, and Aubrey Harris all earned spots on the North Country Classic All-Tournament team. That was the second such honor for Harris who earned the same award in 2012, while Carfi made the 2013 edition of the All-Tournament team.

Marywood opened their season with a scoreless draw against Wilkes University. Marywood got a strong performance from freshman goalkeeper Aly Moyer who made six saves in her collegiate debut. The Pacers are coming off a 2014 season that saw them finish with an 8-11-1 record. Brianna Untener is the leading returning scorer for the Pacers. Untener finished with 10 points on three goals and four assists. Saturday's game will be the first all-time meeting between Clarkson and Marywood.

Plattsburgh started its season off with a bang by defeating Keene State 5-2. Cassidy Clavet led the way with two goals while Sarah Haight scored the game-winning goal just 15 seconds after Keene had tied the game at 2 apiece. Devin McMahon and Clavet are the two returning leading scorers from a Cardinals team that went 9-8-2 in 2014. McMahon finished with 13 points on four goals and five assists while Clavet was just behind her with 12 points on five goals and a pair of assists. Plattsburgh has dominated the historic series between the Cardinals and the Golden Knights, winning 28 of 31 matchups. Plattsburgh defeated Clarkson 3-0 in last year's North Country Invitational with the last Clarkson victory coming in 2012, when Clarkson defeated Plattsburgh 1-0.
