CU Women's Hoops Ends Losing Streak Versus St. Lawrence, 64-41

Potsdam, NY – Not only did the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team end a 43-game losing streak to St. Lawrence on Tuesday evening, but the Golden Knights accomplished the feat in convincing style with a 64-41 victory over the Saints in Liberty League action.

The Golden Knights improved to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the Liberty League, while the Saints suffered their first loss in league play to fall to 8-3 and 2-1. Clarkson's win over St. Lawrence was its most lopsided win against the Saints since the 1991-92 season (76-46).

In the early going, both teams exchanged turnovers and free throws as neither team could get much going offensively, but Clarkson broke an early 5-5 tie with 4:52 to go with a basket from Devin Sorell and never looked back in the opening half. That make started a streak of eight straight possessions where the Knights came away with at least two points, as they pushed themselves out to a double-digit lead at the first break, 22-10. Clarkson extended its lead to as many as 21 points in the first half before finally settling at a margin of 19 points at halftime. Stephanie Grobe made mid-range jumpers from all part of the court and finished the half with 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting, while Ashley Loggins tossed in a near double-double with nine points and seven rebounds to go along with five steals. Clarkson's made success came from its full-court pressure as the team forced the Saints into 14 turnovers and allowed just 5-for-23 shooting by St. Lawrence.

In the second half, Clarkson scored on its first possession and held at least a 20-point lead for the rest of the contest as the team assured itself of not squandering a sizeable advantage at the break by keeping up constant pressure on the Saints. At the end of the contest, St. Lawrence had committed 25 turnovers while the Knights had coughed up the ball on 13 occasions.

Junior guard Stephanie Grobe scored a career-high 21 points on 8-for-15 shooting, while Ashley Loggins nearly produced a triple-double with 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight steals. Madison Shea also delivered eight points. Eleven different players recorded at least one point for the Saints, but none finished in double figures. Cara Waterson and Sarah Thomas each led the way for the Saints with eight points.

With her first basket of the game, Ashley Loggins moved into third place all-time at Clarkson in scoring and also became just the fourth player in program history to record 500 career field goals.
