CU Women's Soccer Plays SLU to First Ever Draw

For the third straight Liberty League game, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team battled to a draw. On Saturday, it was rival St. Lawrence who finished in a 1-1 tie with the Golden Knights.

Clarkson finishes its season 5-9-3 overall and 0-5-3 in the Liberty League while St. Lawrence is 9-5-3 with a 3-3-2 conference mark. The tie was the first time the two teams have drawn in 34 meetings.

Two goals within four minutes of each was the only scoring either team could muster. The opening goal went to the Saints when Katie Starnes' through ball found Hannah Merriam on the left side of Clarkson's box and Merriam was able to finish into the far corner.

It did not take long for Clarkson to respond and it came on a great individual effort by Giulia Mahoney. Mahoney intercepted a St. Lawrence pass and was able to spin by the initial defender. She then slipped past a second Saints' back before shooting across the net and into the bottom corner.

After that brief flurry of goals, further offensive chances were hard to come by. Lauren Flynn ripped two shots in the 42nd minute, but Sovie made two saves to keep both out. Elyse Green answered Sovie with two stops of her own to start the second half before Flynn almost gave Clarkson the lead in the 59th minute, but her shot hit the crossbar.

In overtime, the defensive struggle continued, with Green making the only save of the two extra sessions. Green made seven saves for Clarkson while Sovie finished with three stops for the Saints. St. Lawrence finished with a 17-9 edge in shots and a 10-4 lead in corner kicks.
