Clarkson Men Settle for 3-3 Tie vs Yale in ECAC Men's Hockey Play

A two-goal lead midway through the second period would not hold up for the Clarkson University Hockey team on Saturday night as the Golden Knights had to settle for a 3-3 tie with Yale before 3,002 fans at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights, who have a five-game (4-0-1) unbeaten streak, stand at 7-5-2 overall and own a 4-1-1 ECAC Hockey mark. Clarkson will face off against Yale again next Friday in the opening round of Notre Dame's Shillelagh Tournament.

Clarkson scored a pair of power-play goals 34 seconds apart in the second period, but Yale (2-4-1, 1-4-1) rallied back with two goals in the third period to gained a league point on the road.

The Bulldogs outshot the Green and Gold 36-25. Clarkson was 2-of-2 on the power play and killed off five-of-six Yale man-advantage opportunities, but the visitors made their last chance on the power play in regulation count, scoring the tying goal. Yale also had a power-play in overtime.

Sophomore defenseman Aaron Thow open the scoring at 10:28 of the first period with a shot from the top of the left circle through a screen in front for his first goal of the season. Senior A.J. Fossen and freshman Haralds Egle assisted.

Yale tied it late in the opening period with a goal by Chris Izmirlian from the top of the crease at 17:46.

The Bulldogs were whistled for back-to-back penalties midway through the second frame and Clarkson took full advantage with a pair of power-play goals to take the lead.
Senior defenseman James de Haas fired in a blast from the blueline through as screen in front at 10:44 while the Knights were skating on a two-man advantage. Junior Terrance Amorosa and senior Jordan Boucher assisted.

At 11:18, freshman Nico Sturm picked up a rebound off the backboards on a shot by junior defenseman Kelly Summers and tucked in a shot, giving Clarkson a 3-1 lead. Freshman Sheldon Rempal also assisted.

The Bulldogs controlled play over the final 20 minutes of regulation and scored twice in the third to force overtime.

Ted Hart scored on a tip-in at 7:58 and John Hayden scored his team-high seventh goal of the season on a wrist shot from the bottom of the left circle at 13:02 tie the game at 3-3.

Yale, with the power-play opportunity in overtime had a 3-0 shot advantage in the extra session.

Freshman Jake Kielly made 33 saves, including 16 over the final 25 minutes.

Patrick Spano posted 22 stops for Yale.
