CU Women's Basketball Preview - at William Smith/RIT (2/12-13)

Winners of 12 straight overall and 10 in the Liberty League, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team has just about clinched a spot in the conference tournament, but the Golden Knights will have their toughest challenge of the year in the next 10 days as the team plays four teams fighting for playoff spots, including William Smith and RIT this weekend.

The Golden Knights are 17-4 overall and 10-2 in the Liberty League and are currently on the second-longest winning streak in program history, trailing only the 16 straight wins the team rattled off in the 1989-90 season. Along with team history, several individuals are still trying to make program history of their own as the regular season winds down. Senior forward Ashley Loggins is averaging 16.7 points and 10.4 rebounds per game and is within striking distance of the all-time program marks entering the weekend. Loggins needs just five rebounds to become the program's all-time leader and currently ranks third all-time in scoring with 1534 points, 30 points behind Linda Bondellio (1564) and 44 short of Melissa Smith's (1578) program mark. Loggins produced a pair of double-doubles against RIT and William Smith the first time around and sophomore Devin Sorell also produced better than 20 points per game in mid-January. Sorell leads the league in 3-pointers made with 54 and has a shot at the single-season mark for 3-point field goals (71), helping her average 15.3 ppg. Classmate Madison Shea, junior Stephanie Grobe and junior Alyssia Marsal are combining to score 25.4 ppg, helping the starting five contribute 87.6% of the team's offense, a figure that raises to 89.7% in conference games.

William Smith (9-11, 7-5) handled Clarkson in the first meeting, at least at the beginning of the game. The Herons raced out to a 21-2 lead but Clarkson discovered its offense and outscored William Smith 82-49 the rest of the way. Freshman Mia Morrison is enjoying an impressive start to her collegiate career, averaging 12.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, while upperclassman Melanie Patterson is producing 12.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. Forward Gabrielle Eure is just short of averaging a dobule-double with 10.9 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Her 59.5% rate from the field would lead the conference, but she is just short of qualifying for the league leaders.

RIT (17-4, 10-2) is currently locked in a tie with the Golden Knights for first in the Liberty League, and Clarkson came away with a 74-65 win against the Tigers despite shooting just 3-for-18 from beyond the arc. Jessica Glaz is making a strong run in her sophomore season with 16.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game to go along with a league-leading 86.7% rate from the free throw line and 51 3-pointers. Freshman Tara Lynch is looking like a strong candidate for conference Rookie of the Year with 15.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, as well as a league-best shooting percentage of 53.0%. Amanda Olsen is also tossing in 9.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. The Tigers lead the conference in offense with 71.9 ppg and the team commits a league-low 15.3 turnovers per game.
