CU Women's Basketball Preview - vs. Skidmore (2/19)

Though the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team's 14-game winning streak came to an end on a last-second shot on Wednesday, the Golden Knights still control their own destiny when it comes to the Liberty League playoffs and the team hopes to clinch the top spot in the conference when they face Skidmore College on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights enter Fridays' game with an overall record of 19-5 and a league mark of 12-3, tied for first place with RIT. By virtue of a season sweep of the Tigers, however, Clarkson can claim the top spot with either a win against Skidmore or a loss by RIT to Union this weekend. Skidmore will be far from a push over, though, as the Thoroughbreds are still trying to play their way into the conference tournament at 13-10 overall and 7-7 in league games.

Senior Ashely Loggins put together an impressive stat line in the first meeting between the two teams, scoring 24 points to go along with 13 rebounds, four assists and five steals. The forward also will likely make program history on Friday, as she is only one point of tying the school's record for scoring and her next basket would put her in first place all-time for Clarkson Women's Basketball. Loggins enters the game averaging 16.4 points, 10.8 rebounds and 4.1 steals per game, figures that all rank in the top three in the Liberty League.

Besides Loggins, Clarkson names are littered all over the Liberty League leaderboards. Sophomore Devin Sorell leads the conference in 3-pointers (60) and ranks eighth in the league in scoring with 15.4 ppg. Junior guard Stephanie Grobe is 18th in the conference in scoring (9.8 ppg) and is 10th in assists (2.6 apg), while sophomore guard Madison Shea is ninth in assists (2.9 apg) and third in steals (2.5 spg). Shea stood out for her performance from the free throw line in the teams' first meeting in January, shooting 19-for-20 with a career-high 23 points.

The Golden Knights shot 34-for-44 from the line on January 19th, but Skidmore also had its fair share of opportunities from the line, going 25-for-29 in a foul-ravaged contest that proved to be Clarkson's highest scoring game (88-78) of the season. Where Clarkson depends on its five starters, the Thoroughbreds utilize depth to tire teams out. Kelly Donnelly is the only Skidmore player to average more than 25 minutes per game and one of only two plays more than 20 minutes per contest. The sophomore forward averages 18.5 points and 10.3 rebounds per game while leading the league in field goal percentage (53.1%). Veronica Moceri is averaging 8.0 ppg in 19.9 minutes per contest and Amber Holgate produced 7.7 ppg in just 17.5 minutes per game. The two teams also force more turnovers than any other teams in the league, with Clarkson creating 23.1 turnovers per game and Skidmore averaging 20.7 forced miscues per contest.
