Loggins Surpasses All-Time Mark and CU Women's Hoops Claims Liberty League Regular-Season Title

Potsdam, NY – Ten consecutive points in the final minute turned a six-point deficit into a four-point win as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team claimed a 69-65 victory over Skidmore College on Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights closed out the regular-season as the Liberty League Champions, improving to 20-5 overall and 13-3 in the conference to take the top seed. Skidmore was eliminated from the conference playoff chase, falling to 13-11 and 7-8.

The Liberty League regular-season title is a first for the Knights, and Clarkson also was able to celebrate an individual accomplishment in the early going. On her first basket of the game, senior Ashley Loggins became Clarkson's all-time leading scorer, surpassing the 26-year-old mark of Melissa Smith.

Clarkson trailed 65-59 with just over a minute to go before Alyssia Marsal hit a layup to spark the run that would win the game for the Knights. Marsal brought the Knights within four, Skidmore turned the ball over and on the ensuing Clarkson possession Madison Shea hit a jumper to get Clarkson within two. Skidmore again turned the ball over and Ashley Loggins quickly drove to the basket, made a layup and was fouled for a 3-point play the old-fashioned way to put Clarkson up 66-65. Skidmore's next two possessions ended in a miss and a turnover, and the Knights hit three more free throws to clinch the win.

The surprising late comeback didn't seem possible considering Skidmore's strong start. In each of the first two quarters, Skidmore used modest runs to push away from the Golden Knights. Clarkson led in the early going of the first by tallying six of the first eight points, but Skidmore quickly rallied to take the lead. After a pair of free throws from Ashley Loggins at the 2:04 mark brought Clarkson within one (16-15), Skidmore ended the period with six points to claim a seven-point advantage at the first break. Clarkson responded with eight points to start the second, but again the Thoroughbreds halted the Knights run and wouldn't let the home push its lead to more than a point. The two teams traded baskets on the next few possessions, but the Thoroughbreds ended the half with a 5-0 run, capped by a Kelly Donnelly 3-pointer with 1:03 on the clock.

At the start of the third quarter, Skidmore edged out to a 10-point lead (40-30) after Veronica Moceri converted a layup in traffic at the 7:42 mark, but Clarkson was down by just a point on a 12-3 run over the next four minutes. The fourth quarter is where it appeared Skidmore had the game in hand. Moceri made a shot with 6:45 to go up by eight points and while Clarkson came back, the Thoroughbreds always seemed to have an answer for any small run by the Knights. It was only the final 10-0 run of the game that gave Clarkson the win.

Loggins finished with 28 points, shooting 9-for-17 overall and 9-for-9 from the line, to go along with 12 rebounds and seven steals. Stephanie Grobe produced 12 points and seven boards and Marsal tied her career-high with 12 points. For Skidmore, Kelly Donnelly had a strong game with 15 points, 16 rebounds and five assists. Veronica Moceri tossed in 12 and Amber Holgate scored 10 for the Thoroughbreds.
