Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | Feb. 27, 2016

Men's Lacrosse Opens Season with 14-6 Win at Hartwick

In its first game of the season, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team rode its experience to a 14-6 victory at Hartwick on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson's record opens at 1-0 while Hartwick is 0-1. It is the first time that Clarkson has started the season with a win since 2013.

Both teams felt each other out in the early going, as they traded goals in the first period. Hartwick took early 1-0 and 2-1 leads, but goals from Ryan DaRin and Scott Dosser canceled each out.

In the 2nd quarter, Clarkson's experience took over the game. A Kyle Brown goal, assisted by DaRin, at 12:56 gave Clarkson its first lead at 3-2. Clarkson's 2015 leading scorer Ryan St. Croix scored two straight goals, the first at 6:55 and the second with just four seconds remaining, to give Clarkson a 5-2 lead at the break.

Clarkson's momentum continued in the third period. J.R. Campbell scored at 13:33 quickly followed by St. Croix's third goal at 13:13 to put Clarkson up 7-2. Next came a goal from Shane Kilday at 11:40 with Dosser scoring his second of the game at 10:06. Hartwick finally stopped Clarkson's streak of eight straight goals, but quick scores from Campbell and Mark Uhlig extended the lead to 11-3. Hartwick answered again with a goal of its own at 1:33, but 15 seconds later Marc Simmons scored for Clarkson and the Golden Knights led 12-4 after three quarters.

Hartwick goals sandwiched around goals from Marcus Lavarnway and Brett Billhart led to the final score of 14-6. The 14 goals are the most in a Clarkson season opener since the Green and Gold dropped 16 on Oneonta State in 2012.

Overall, Clarkson outshot Hartwick 37-28. Clarkson had 18 turnovers, but forced the Hawks into 21 turnovers of their own and scooped up 39 ground balls to Hartwick's 30. Keith Mierzwa led the way in that category, pouncing on seven ground balls while Sam Groves and Nicholas Lenta had four apiece. Lenta went 9-16 at the faceoff circle and Kilday was a perfect three of threat the X. Nick Strandholm made 12 saves in 56:58 of action, allowing five goals with Peter Hargrave allowing one goal in 3:02.

Clarkson's next game will be on March 2nd, when the Golden Knights play host to SUNY Canton.
