CU Women's Hoops to Face Stockton in First Round of NCAA Tournament

Though the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team doesn't have any familiarity with its opponents this weekend for the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, the Golden Knights will at least be as close to home as possible among the 16 host sites as the team will take on Stockton University at 5:00 pm Friday night at the Louis Alexander Palestra on the campus of the University of Rochester.

The Golden Knights (22-5) overall are part of a four-team pod that will be hosted by Rochester. Clarkson will face Stockton (21-6) while the host Yellowjackets (20-5) will face Johnson & Wales (24-3). Clarkson is the only team that received its NCAA bid via automatic qualifier, with the other three schools getting in on at-large selections.

Clarkson is heading to its second NCAA appearance ever, though the last time the Golden Knights reached the tournament they made their run a memorable one, making it all the way to the Final Four in 1989. Stockton University, Friday's first round opponent, is making its second straight NCAA appearance in sixth overall. The Ospreys went 22-7 last year and won their first round game before falling in the second round contest, and Stockton enters the tournament at 21-6 after falling in NJAC Semifinals against Rowan University last Tuesday.

The Golden Knights are enjoying their most successful season in more than two decades, having posted 22 victories already in 27 contests. The team rattled off 14 straight wins from January 8th to February 13th and has won 17 of its last 18 contests. Senior Ashley Loggins ranks among the national leaders in steals with 112 and ranked second in the Liberty League in both scoring (17.2 ppg) and rebounding (10.7 rpg). Clarkson gets most of its work done on defense with pressure, producing a plus-6.85 turnover margin and 13 steals per game.

The Ospreys are led by a trio of sophomores averaging double digits. Six-foot-two sophomore forward Sasha Williams is an impressive force on the interior, averaging 6.2 blocks per game to go along with 13.1 points and 12.2 rebounds per game. Williams has recorded at least three blocks in every game this season. Classmate Lea Mendolla is also averaging 13.0 points per game, but she gets her points from the perimeter with a team-best 60 3-pointers. Najha Treadwell, another sophomore, is also close to a double-double with 11.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Stockton is averaging 29.7 defensive rebounds per game.
