Baseball Falls to Suffolk

Playing its fifth game in three days, the Clarkson University Baseball team was unable to keep up with the potent offense of Suffolk who ran away with an 18-4 win on Sunday afternoon at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale, Florida.

Clarkson falls to 1-4 on the season while Suffolk improves to 3-1.

Suffolk jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first and two more in the second.

Clarkson got one run back in the third inning when Anthony Padrazo doubled to deep left field and then two batters later, scored on a single by Brad Pearson. The Golden Knights crept even closer in the bottom of the fifth. Bobby Smarrelli walked to lead off the inning and then Padrazo ripped his second double of the day to put runners on second and third with no outs. Chris Miller scored Smarrelli on a ground out and then a balk scored Padrazo.

However, Suffolk answered back immediately. The Rams hung eight runs in the top of the sixth, with the rally capped off with a three run home run. Suffolk added five more runs in the seventh inning.

Clarkson added one more run in the seventh. Padrazo singled for his third hit of the night. Miller followed with a double. Alex Hill, who pinch ran for Padrazo, scored on a Mike Crick groundout.

Joe Rooney started his first game of the season and threw five innings, allowing five runs on eleven hits. Jamie Terry, Vincent Granuzzo, and Ryan Riley also made their season debuts on the mound, with Granuzzo and Riley pitching for the first time in their collegiate careers. Ethan Kornbreck pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game.

Padrazo was 3-4 with two runs scored. Miller and Dom Pirro were the other Clarkson hitters with multiple hits with Pearson also reaching base twice.

Clarkson will have Monday off before playing Curry College in a doubleheader on Tuesday morning.
