CU Softball Preview - vs. Plattsburgh State (4/20)

Though the Clarkson University Softball team had its home doubleheader against Oswego State canceled for Thursday, the Golden Knights will still look to stay sharp when they travel to take on Plattsburgh State on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped four games in conference play this past weekend, three by one run, to fall to 17-9 overall. The Cardinals enter the doubleheader with a record of 16-10. This will be the first time the two teams meet.

Clarkson fell four times against RIT and Rochester, but sophomore Summer Lancette remained hot as her slash line of .431/.500/.631 is one of the best in the Liberty League. She has been an impressive combination of power and speed this year as her .631 slugging percentage, 23 runs batted in, and 19 stolen bases each ranks second in the conference. Classmate Raeanna Dunn is also hitting .398/.468/.518 with a league-best 29 runs scored, and her 22 stolen bases in 23 chances are also the top figure in the conference. Dunn and Lancette have combined to swipe 41 of Clarkson's 64 bases this year, as the Knights easily outdistance the remainder of the conference in that category.

Plattsburgh will run a little as well, but the team generally likes to bludgeon the ball to score runs, utilizing 13 home runs and a .441 slugging percentage to do just that. Jennifer Groat leads the team in numerous categories, including hitting (.443), OBP (.500) and slugging (.671). She also has scored 23 runs and driven in 25 more thanks to 12 extra-base hits. Amanda Tantillo also has 12 extra-base hits, with six home runs helping her drive in 22 runs with a .667 slugging percentage. Tantillo likes to swing for the fences, as she has only two walks this season. The Cardinals also have three other players hitting above .300 in Jackie Decker (.305), Dominique Zummo (.302) and Kaitlyn Preiss (.300), who also leads the team with 13 stolen bases. In the pitching circle, Katie Pitkin has seen the most time with 78.2 innings, posting a 9-5 record with a 2.86 earned run average. Pitkin can get out of jams with strikeouts (58), which is fortunate since she has allowed nearly a hit per inning and also provided her opponents' 49 walks. Morgan Anderson is the team's other hurler, as she has a 2.65 ERA in 68.2 innings.
