CU Women's Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision

Two goals in two minutes erased an early lead for the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team and the Golden Knights lost to Potsdam 2-1 on Tuesday night on Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson drops to 4-3-0 so far this season while Potsdam extends its winning streak to six games and is 7-1-0 overall.

Clarkson came very close to taking the lead in the 19th minute. A Potsdam foul gave the Green and Gold a free kick from just outside the Bears' box and Summer Gillespie stepped up to the take the kick. Gillespie's shot had the Potsdam goalkeeper beaten, but the ball caromed off the crossbar rather than finding the back of the net.

Undeterred by Gillespie's near-miss, Clarkson continued to attack and the pressure paid off in the 38th minute. Camryn Careccia laid the ball off to Lauren Flynn about 35 yards from the Potsdam goal. Flynn's first time shot sailed high and long and ended up in the top left corner of the Potsdam net for Flynn's seventh goal of the season and giving Clarkson a 1-0 lead.

The lead was short-lived though. In the 41st minute, Potsdam earned a corner kick and when Kaylen Van Wagner crossed it into the box, the ball bounced off a Clarkson player and into the Golden Knight goal. Potsdam added a second goal in the 42nd minute when Van Wagner's free kick shot rolled into the bottom left corner of the Clarkson net.

In the second half, Clarkson pushed forward to tie the game, but could not find a second goal. Flynn had another long range shot in the second half, but this time the ball went just high. Courtney Black also had a chance to tie the game with a close range header in the 67th minute, but Bri Thibeau made the save for Potsdam.

Clarkson had a 15-6 edge in shots and took six corner kicks to Potsdam's two. In her first start of the season, Nicole Zlotnick made three saves for Clarkson while Thibeau also had three stops for Clarkson.

The Green and Gold will start conference play on Saturday when they travel to RIT for a 3:00 pm game.
