Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | September 3rd, 2016

Flynn's Streak Continues as Clarkson Women's Soccer Dominates 3-0

For the second straight day, goals from senior Lauren Flynn were the deciding factor as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team defeated Rutgers-Newark 3-0 on Saturday afternoon on Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson is now 2-0-0 so far this season while Rutgers-Newark drops to 0-2-0.

Flynn's first goal on Saturday was her second successfully converted penalty kick of the season. The penalty kick was earned by Giulia Mahoney, who collected the ball near midfield and then went on a long, mazy until she was finally taken down by a Scarlet Knights defender just inside the penalty box. Flynn then stepped up and tucked her spot kick inside the post to give Clarkson the lead 13 minutes into the contest.

Flynn added a second goal in the second half. Courtney Black passed to Flynn who found herself in a pocket of space between the Rutgers-Newark defense and midfield. Flynn turned, took a dribble and then let loose a wicked shot that soared into the top right corner of the goal.

Clarkson added a third goal late in the game. After a Rutgers-Newark foul, Paige Spittler played the ensuing free kick across the box and Danielle Martin was the first one to get to it, smashing a first time shot past the goalkeeper. It was the first collegiate goal of Martin's career.

Clarkson finished with a 15-7 edge in shots while the Scarlet Knights took eight corners to Clarkson's two. Elyse Green made two saves for Clarkson to complete her first collegiate shutout while Heidi Paulson had five stops for Rutgers-Newark.

Clarkson will return to action next weekend when Johnson State College and Green Mountain College come to Potsdam for games on Friday and Saturday respectively.
